First, Know Which Chemicals and Shower Cleaning Tools To Avoid
Before I jump in and share the best shower cleaner for your shower, you should first know which chemicals and cleaning tools you should not use to avoid damage to your tile grout or tub!!
1) Avoid using too much water
According to Desert Tile and Grout, you should avoid using too much water when you are cleaning the tile. The grout between your tile is extremely porous. As such, when the water seeps in, it stays in, breaks down the grout, and begins to build mold and mildew over time.
Instead, you’ll want to get the right cleaner with the right solution to clean your tiles. You’ll learn what the right tile/shower cleaner is in a minute!
2) Avoid using coarse scrubbers
I am so guilty of using coarse scrubbers.
If you’re like me, you may have grown up believing that coarse scrubbers were the best shower cleaner tool to use because it is a super-effective in scrubbing mildew away fast.
Nevertheless, stop using it.
According to Desert Tile and Grout, “Grout is more delicate than it appears. Using a coarse scrubber like steel wool can remove granules from the grout, leaving holes in it and making it more porous and more vulnerable to future damage.”
We don’t want that. So instead, the tile expert recommends that you use a soft cloth like this one:
Or a sponge, like this one:
This sponge was specifically made for cleaning tile grout.
If you insist on using something with more “scrub,” however, then you can use the back of a kitchen scrub, like this one:
It’s a non-scratch scrub from Scotch Brite that you can use for your shower as well as other everyday jobs.
Now, if you want to clean your shower without getting on your hands and knees, then I highly recommend the Yocada Tub Tile Scrubber Brush:
The Yocada Brush handle is lightweight and over four feet long.
It is long enough that you will no longer need to get on your hands and knees or stand on your tippy-toes ever again!
The Yocada Brush also passes the “No Damage to Grout” test: the brush is a sponge-like scouring pad that can scrub away the mildew without scratching your grout.
3) Avoid Using Harsh Chemicals
Finally, the tile expert warns that you should avoid using harsh chemicals and acids on your tile grout. It’s the quickest way to rotten your grout.
Again, I’m guilty of this!! Until recently, I had used bleach on my tile and it always worked magic to get rid of my tile stains. Nevertheless, I always wondered (and feared) what the long-term effects were on the tile grout for using such a harsh chemical.
Instead, you should use a friendlier solution and clean your shower regularly to keep your tile from staining or growing mildew.
And now is the time to get into what those friendlier shower cleaners are…
The Best Shower Cleaner for Your Tile Grout
I researched and reviewed tons and tons of grout cleaners and found that this is one of the BEST shower cleaners for tile grout.
It is a heavy-duty tile & grout cleaner and whitener that lifts dirt, grease, and mildew with ease. It’s also safe to use on color grout.
To get the best results, most users leave Grout-eez on for about 10 minutes and then wipe it off with a sponge.
It is a friendly tile cleaning solution that not only gives your tile a good clean but restores the surface of the grout and leaves a layer of protection against mold and mildew.
For best results, leave the solutions on for 10 minutes before washing off with a sponge, cloth, or soft brush.
The Best Shower Cleaner For Multipurpose Cleaning
Now, you and I know that cleaning the tile grout isn’t all there is to cleaning a shower. We still have to clean:
- the shower floor – or the tub if it’s not a stand-up shower
- the shower handles and/or knobs
- the showerhead
- the glass door
- the shower curtain
I’ve typically used 2-3 products to get the job done:
- Windex for the shower handles, knobs, glass, and showerhead,
- Ajax and/or bleach for the tub/shower floor
- Chlorox All-Purpose Spray and/or Ajax for the shower curtain.
But I thought there had to be a better way. So I did my research and after lots of digging, I found this amazing shower cleaner that DOES-IT-ALL.
I mean, doesn’t it just sound amazing…haha. It also does amazing things.
- the glass in your shower
- the handles, the knobs,
- the showerhead
- the tub/shower floor
- shower curtain
- shower wall
- and your grout.
Not only does it DO-IT-ALL, but it cleans your shower without creating or leaving a strong odor.
The scent that it does leave behind is a beautiful, relaxing eucalyptus scent.
This shower cleaner is also a plant-derived solution that is safe to use around pets and children.
For best results, users have found that leaving the solution on for 7-10 minutes to be the sweet spot. Then wipe off with a cloth or sponge.
Don’t want to wait around for 7-10 minutes??
Then I highly recommend the Wet & Forget Shower Cleaner:
It’s one of the best shower cleaners for several reasons:
This shower cleaner doesn’t require any scrubbing or wiping. You just spray and let the magic happen, as it picks up and prevents soap build-up, grime, oils, mold, and mildew.
Plus, out of all the self-cleaning solutions that I found, this was the only self-cleaning solution that received favorable reviews.
To get the best results, the creators of this product recommend that you spray your shower weekly.
It has approximately twelve weeks of “cleaning power” so it will last you a real long while before you have to replace it.
The Best Shower Cleaner for Mold & Mildew:
If your shower or tub has some serious mold or mildew, then here are some products I’ve found online that you can do the job:
This one sounds serious because it is!
It’s a fast-acting agent that gets rid of stubborn mold and mildew stains. Not only can you use it on your shower, but you can use it on tough surfaces like your fence!
I would NOT recommend that you use this product all the time (because it is a harsh chemical) but occasionally when your shower gets seriously out of control with mold or mildew.
Users of the product almost unanimously say that this stuff works but it’s like “bleach in a spray bottle” and “noxious,” so I wouldn’t recommend this product if you are very sensitive to strong smells.
I would also keep it far away from your clothes and use an old shirt and bottom that you don’t mind messing up when you clean, just in case!
2) Lysol Multi-Purpose Cleaner
The next best shower cleaner that kicks in within minutes and scrubs away tough mold and mildew is the Lysol Multi-Purpose Cleaner.
It does a FANTASTIC job in getting rid of mold and mildew but just like RMR-86, however, it is like bleach in a spray bottle. It creates a strong odor.
If you would like to use this product, I recommend that you spray your shower down with Lysol, walk away for a couple of minutes while leaving the door open to let the toxic fumes escape, and then come back to wipe it down.
Some users even wipe the Lysol soon after spraying the surfaces down, which you can also do if you don’t mind the smell.
Just make you don’t leave it on for more than 10 minutes or you’ll be stuck scrubbing the solution out.
It can get stick to your shower surface if left for too long.
Done well, however, Lysol will make your shower will look as good as new!
3) Tilex Mold and Mildew Remover Spray, 32 oz
The third best cleaning solution for mold and mildew is the Tilex Mold and Mildew Remover.
This spray delivers a powerful clean without scrubbing. Once you spray, just wipe away with a cloth or sponge.
The Best Shower Cleaner for Hard Water
Ugh, now I have only dealt with hard water once (for approximately one year) but it was such a pain. It left spots and chalks of dust behind.
For that reason, I did tons of research to find the best shower cleaner to get rid of hard water stains:
Both of these cleaner solutions are insanely powerful in getting rid of the toughest stains.
As such, if you want to transform your shower into a “fresh-bought looking” shower with shine and sparkle, then make sure you get one of these hard water shower cleaner sprays!
